Ibid. CHAPTER 3 THE 1741 NEW YORK CONSPIRACY By the course of the evidence, it appears, that a design was conceived to destroy this city by fire, and massacre the inhabitants. —Daniel Horsmanden1 B y the mid-eighteenth century, slaves constituted a full 20 percent of New York City’s population. Living in close quarters with their masters, a proximity that later Southern slaveholders would find unimaginable, it was not uncommon for slaves to hobnob with whites of the lowest laboring classes in dramshops, the most disreputable kinds of taverns the city had to offer.

But in all likelihood, his retreat was hasty and undignified. Few things were more alarming to mid-eighteenth-century white South Carolinians than the possibility of a slave uprising. The Stono revolt of 1739, named for the Stono River location where it erupted, was a nightmare come true. By the time it was quelled, 12 plantations had been burnt and 25 whites, men, women, and children, butchered. The revolt had lasted less than a full day. But the horror of it scarred South Carolina’s whites and provoked a revised set of slave codes aimed at nipping future uprisings in the bud.

One week to the day after the Fort George fire, the home of one Captain Warren caught fire. On April 1, a storehouse went up. Following that, over the next five days, lofts and kitchens were fired, hot coals were found nestled in straw The 1741 New York Conspiracy in stables, and on April 6 no fewer than three fires broke out, one of them of truly monumental proportions at a warehouse owned by a man named Philipse. The rash of fires that hit the city in less than a month had begun to raise suspicions that the blazes were of nefarious origins, and the fire at the warehouse confirmed those fears.
